YIN923: BioOrBan: Bio-Based Packaging Material From Orange And Latundan Banana Peels
Lucas Tagumpay Cantre Taguig Integrated School
A major environmental concern is plastic food packaging due to its non-biodegradable nature and long-term impact on ecosystems. This study developed a bio-based packaging material using Orange (Citrus sinensis) and Latundan Banana (Musa acuminata × M. balbisiana) peels as primary raw materials. Additional ingredients such as cornstarch, glycerin, vinegar, and salt were combined and processed using basic equipment including a boiling pot, blender, and molder. The resulting pouches were evaluated by thirty participants in terms of durability and shelf-life. Findings revealed that the packaging showed good structural stability, resistance to damage, and no mold formation. Overall, the bio-based material presents a sustainable alternative to conventional plastic while maintaining functional performance.
