Serene Lock Sow Mun Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS
The integration of Industry 4.0 into laboratory programs is essential for effective process control education. Current curricula often rely solely on direct instrument use, failing to adequately prepare students for this demand. Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS addresses this gap by updating its curriculum, transitioning to simulation-driven laboratories. This is implemented in CEB3032 Chemical Engineering Laboratory III for Jan and May 2021 cohorts, which facilitates learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. Before implementation, experiments suitable for simulation are meticulously chosen and prepared as self-learning interactive modules. Students engage in creating simulations, conducting experiments, and analyzing results, aligning with advanced educational frameworks like Bloom's Taxonomy and Five Es Inquiry-Based Learning. Performance metrics indicate improvements in learning outcomes by having >30% students achieving grades ranging from B to A. Student feedback highlights the efficacy of integrating process simulation, affirming its potential for wider academic adoption.
