YI1073: Trash To Treasure: Empowering Environmental Awareness And Discipline With Smart Technology

Nor Aizurin Binti Zamri SMK GEMAS

This project aims to develop an interactive smart bin using an Arduino microcontroller to control an automated and integrated input-output system. The smart bin is designed to encourage good values among students using technology and a digital reward system. When an ultrasonic sensor detects waste, a buzzer will sound and an LCD screen will display the reward points earned. In addition, a unique QR code is provided or displayed for students to scan as proof of their good deed. The scanned data can then be verified by the school’s Discipline Unit for awarding rewards, certificates, or recognition. A reset button is included to allow the system to be used by the next student. All functions are controlled through Arduino programming, which manages sensor readings, LCD display output, buzzer activation, and reset logic. This project not only supports hygiene and civic education but also introduces students to microcontroller technology, automation, and smart education systems. The waste collected with this smart bin, particularly recyclable materials such as paper, will be systematically gathered and sent to a nearby recycling center. There, the paper waste will undergo a recycling process to be transformed into new usable paper products such as books, boxes, or packaging materials. This effort not only reduces environmental pollution and the volume of waste at landfills but also promotes sustainability practices and supports the circular economy within the school community and society.
