In today’s inclusive classrooms, dyslexic learners struggle with reading and long vowel sounds, impacting their literacy skills and academic progress. To address this challenge, Vowel Voyage: Smart Board for Enhancing Long Vowel Sounds was developed that integrates a QR code of a speech synthesis app which aims at helping dyslexic learners master long vowel sounds 'ee' and 'ea' through interactive and engaging activities. By using the Vowel Voyage: Smart Board, students engage in hands-on activities where they match the picture in the flashcard with a corresponding word with long vowel sounds of ‘ee’ or ‘ea’. Students can also scan a QR code to a speech synthesis app to check on the answer as well as pronunciation feedback. The Vowel Voyage: Smart Board will benefit three main stakeholders – students with disabilities, teachers who are teaching students with disabilities and schools which offer Program Pendidikan Inklusif (PPI). Students with disabilities who use the Vowel Voyage: Smart Board might have better learning experiences and easier grasp of the knowledge being delivered by the teachers. Most importantly, it helps to fulfill the inspirations outlined in the Malaysia Education Blueprint (2013-2025) for an increasing enrolment of special needs students in the PPI by improving the quality of the programme. The Vowel Voyage: Smart Board is still at its prototype stage and we have envisioned it to be commercialised later after factoring the cost, time and logistic. The potential market for this innovation is the 6,404 primary and secondary schools which are currently implementing PPI in Malaysia.
