The ROBIN-1 version 2.0 project, developed by an innovative student team from SJKT Rawang, presents a pioneering step towards smart waste management through the creation of an intelligent, contactless dustbin. With the rising concerns over hygiene and environmental cleanliness, the team identified a crucial gap: the reluctance of individuals to use traditional dustbins due to fear of contamination and unpleasant experiences. In response, ROBIN-1 (Robo Dustbin Version 2.0) offers a modern, user-friendly solution that minimizes physical contact while promoting responsible disposal habits.
This upgraded prototype incorporates a range of technologies including ultrasonic sensors, servo motors, an Arduino Nano microcontroller, a voice feedback system, and a solar-powered energy source. A key innovation is the Smart Fill Detection System, which uses ultrasonic sensing to monitor the waste level in real time and communicate bin status through color-coded LED indicators and an OLED display. The bin automatically shuts down when full, preventing overflow and signaling the need for maintenance, thus improving operational efficiency.
Beyond its technical features, ROBIN-1 version 2.0 is constructed using recyclable materials and is powered by solar energy, making it both eco-friendly and cost-effective. Developed over a span of two months at a cost of RM550, the project also emphasizes STEM education, teamwork, and problem-solving, offering students hands-on experience in electronics, coding, and sustainable design.
Pilot testing within the school setting demonstrated a significant reduction in littering and a positive shift in cleanliness habits among students and staff. The team envisions future upgrades including battery level indicators, enhanced waste analytics, and school-wide deployment to expand its impact.
