BioBand is an innovative wound care solution developed using biodegradable natural polymers such as starch, agar, or gelatin, combined with pigments extracted from red cabbage. These pigments contain anthocyanins, which act as natural pH indicators. As a result, the bandage is able to change color in response to pH changes at the wound site, allowing early and non-invasive detection of possible infections.
The production of BioBand involves several key steps, including the extraction of red cabbage pigments, preparation of a biopolymer solution, coating of the solution onto a gauze substrate, and controlled drying to form a durable bandage. The effectiveness of BioBand is evaluated based on its sensitivity to pH changes, mechanical strength, and biodegradability.
BioBand offers a sustainable alternative to conventional wound dressings by reducing reliance on synthetic materials while providing a simple and effective method for monitoring wound healing. This project demonstrates how natural materials and scientific principles can be combined to create practical, ecofriendly healthcare innovations suitable for everyday use.
