The MukahXplore project is an innovative digital initiative aimed at transforming the tourism sector and preserving cultural heritage in Mukah, Sarawak through the integration of Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) technologies. This innovation focuses on the digitalization of three main heritage sites, namely Tapak Kaul, Mini Muzium Sapan Puloh, and Jerunei Sungai Teloh, while also showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Melanau community, including traditional food and attire.
Developed using the CDIO methodology (Conceive, Design, Implement, Operate), the project has successfully produced a mobile application that integrates high-fidelity 3D visuals, 360° panoramic experiences, and interactive storytelling. This innovation contributes to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) by promoting sustainable tourism and local products. It also supports SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) through the application of advanced AR/VR technologies in building digital tourism infrastructure. Empirical findings involving 422 respondents indicate a highly positive level of acceptance, with an overall mean satisfaction score of 4.48. Pearson correlation analysis recorded a value of r = 0.68, demonstrating a significant relationship between the quality of digital experience and the increased intention of tourists to visit Mukah physically.The projecthas been registered under MyIPO (CRY 202510168). Overall, MukahXplore acts as a catalyst for smart tourism, supporting local economic growth (SMEs) while ensuring the sustainability and global visibility of Melanau cultural heritage.
