Plastic pollution and unmanaged agricultural waste are growing environmental challenges that demand innovative and sustainable solutions. This project introduces an innovative biocomposite material derived from the fibres of cogongrass (Imperata cylindrica) and lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus). The innovation seeks to transform underutilised agricultural waste into high-value, biodegradable products for automotive interior applications and environmentally friendly packaging, providing a sustainable alternative to traditional plastic-based materials. The production process used a systematic seven-step method that included treating the fibres with soda ash, pulping, filtering, moulding, drying, and coating them with epoxy resin to make them stronger, more heat-resistant, more durable, and more water-resistant. Experimental testing was carried out to evaluate the material’s physical and functional properties. The results demonstrated excellent performance, including 9.41 N tensile strength, 2 kg load capacity, heat resistance up to 180°C, 15% water absorption per minute, and 27% biodegradation within two weeks. These results indicate that the material possesses both strong practical performance and significant environmental advantages compared to conventional plastic materials. The developed prototypes include car door panels, egg cartons, cup holders, and reusable seedling pots, showcasing the material’s versatility, scalability, and commercial potential across multiple industries. This new idea also supports green technology, the principles of a circular economy, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by cutting down on waste, encouraging the use of renewable resources, and promoting product life cycles that don't create any waste. Overall, the project demonstrates how science, engineering, and creativity can transform natural waste into scalable, marketable, and eco-conscious solutions for a more sustainable future.
