Medication adherence is a fundamental component of effective healthcare treatment, particularly for elderly patients, individuals with chronic diseases, and those with physical or visual limitations. Failure to follow prescribed medication schedules can lead to serious health complications, reduced treatment effectiveness, increased hospital admissions and higher healthcare costs. Despite the availability of pill organizers and reminder applications, medication non-adherence remains a common issue due to forgetfulness, lack of supervision and the limitations of conventional medication storage systems. To address these challenges, this project introduces MEDGUARD: Smart Time-Locked Medication Adherence System, an innovative medication management solution designed to improve patient compliance, safety and independence. MEDGUARD incorporates a sensor-based time-lock mechanism and alarm system as its major improvement to ensure that medication compartments can only be accessed at scheduled times. This feature effectively prevents early access, overdose, and accidental repeated consumption of medication. As a moderate improvement, LED indicator lights are integrated to provide clear visual guidance, helping users quickly identify the correct compartment based on time and schedule. Additionally, Braille code labeling is included as a minor improvement to enhance accessibility for visually impaired users, promoting inclusivity in healthcare innovation. The system is developed using a microcontroller, sensors, LED lights, an alarm module, battery power supply, pill compartments and Braille labels. The novelty of MEDGUARD lies in its ability to combine security, reminders and accessibility into a single, user-friendly medication adherence system. Unlike traditional pill boxes, MEDGUARD actively controls access to medication while guiding users through visual, audio and tactile cues. MEDGUARD is suitable for various settings, including homes, hospitals, clinics, nursing homes and long-term care facilities. The innovation demonstrates strong commercial value due to its affordable materials, simple design and high relevance to current healthcare needs. In conclusion, MEDGUARD has the potential to significantly reduce medication errors, improve patient safety and support independent living. With further refinement and development, this innovation holds strong potential for commercialization and positive impact within the healthcare industry.
