YIN556: CHEMIDUO4

JAYDEN TAN JIING HAO Labuan International School

Purpose: This study addresses the challenges upper secondary students face in mastering the nomenclature and formulation of ionic chemical compounds. The project aimed to create ChemiDuo4, a gamified learning tool designed to enhance understanding through interactive engagement.

Methodology: ChemiDuo4 utilizes a color-coded card system featuring 33 blue cards for positive ions, 18 red cards for negative ions, and specialized decks for polyatomic ions. Students draw one card from each deck and must determine and record the correct chemical formula within a 15–20 second countdown. The implementation was evaluated by 13 upper secondary students and a panel of experts, including a chemistry lecturer and school principal.

Results: Quantitative analysis revealed that 92.3% of student participants scored higher on post-test evaluations after interacting with the product compared to their pre-test results. Qualitative feedback from educators highlighted the product's effectiveness in resolving confusion regarding ionic charges and periodic table relationships.

Conclusion: ChemiDuo4 is an effective educational tool that fosters teamwork and simplifies complex chemical concepts through an attractive, high-engagement design. Future iterations intend to incorporate memory-based mechanics to further improve students' ability to identify chemical names and formulas
