CRACK2CHALK is an innovative chalk-making kit derived from eggshell waste that encourages sustainable creativity while offering a practical solution to the environmental burden caused by excessive food waste in households and food industries. Eggshells, when discarded irresponsibly, contribute significantly to organic waste accumulation in landfills, releasing greenhouse gases during decomposition and polluting surrounding soil and water ecosystems. This project focuses on transforming that calcium-rich waste material — a process of calcite biomass upcycling — into a renewable and functional writing tool that can be repurposed for everyday educational use. The chalk produced in CRACK2CHALK is formulated through sustainable chalk synthesis, combining crushed eggshells rich in eggshell-derived calcium carbonate, flour, water, and a binding agent, which together produce a firm and smooth stick suitable for writing and drawing after drying. Users of the kit are invited to create their own chalk sticks through this circular economy fabrication process, learning basic material science concepts while engaging with eco-friendly innovation. Not only is the chalk safe for the environment during use, but after disposal it naturally breaks down and can even serve as a soil supplement, enriching agricultural land without leaving harmful residue. This product embodies zero-waste pedagogical innovation, supporting several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including Goal 4 for quality education, Goal 9 for industry innovation, Goal 12 for responsible consumption, Goal 13 for climate action, and Goal 15 for life on land. By offering a practical and educational experience, this project highlights how a simple kit can turn an everyday waste product into a functional, hands-on solution that blends science, sustainability, and creativity.
