YIN148: BioSpectra Edible Pack-Nature-Powered Edible Packaging For Real Time Food Freshness Detection

MUHAMMAD ALIM FIRDAUS BIN MOHD HAMKA SMK TUN SYED NASIR ISMAIL

BioSpectra edible pack is an innovative edible and biodegradable food packaging developed using natural biopolymers and purple cabbage extract as a pH-sensitive indicator. The project addresses two major global concerns: plastic pollution and the lack of real-time freshness indicator in conventional food packaging. The biofilm was formulated using agar as the base polymer, glycerin as a plasticizer, Centella asiatica extract as a bio functional additive and purple cabbage extract containing anthocyanins as the natural pH indicator. The film was tested under different pH conditions to simulate food spoilage. Results showed visible colour transitions from reddish (acidic) to purple (neutral and bluish -green (alkaline), demonstrating its potential to indicate freshness changes without electronics sensors. Additional test was conducted to evaluate flexibility, thickness and biodegradability compared to conventional plastics packaging. Findings suggest that Smart Biofilm has strong potential as a sustainable, safety and low-cost smart packaging alternative suitable for future food systems. This project was conducted at school laboratory scale for educational and research purposes
